Sustainable Assemblage Artworks by Nichola Bryan

The horrendous 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires lead to the Endangered Kangaroo Island
Glossy Black cockatoos losing 38.5% of their known nest sites and 54% of their sheoak food
trees as recorded by the Kangaroo Island Glossies Recovery Program (source:
www.Landscape.sa.gov.au).

In August 2023, WWF Australia and Greening Australia, working with Fleurieu Peninsula
landholders on mainland South Australia began planting 19,000 eucalyptus and drooping
sheoak trees as potential future food and nest-rich habitat for the endangered Kangaroo Island
sub species.
“The SA Glossy Black-Cockatoo – which feeds almost exclusively on seeds from drooping sheoaks
– disappeared from the mainland in the 1970s after decades of clearing decimated sheoak
woodlands. On the Fleurieu alone, there were 22,000 hectares of sheoak woodland but only
about 2% remains.” (quotes from www.GreeningAustralia.org.au)
‘Glossy Black, Come Back’ is made to celebrate the positive program mentioned above, whilst
reflecting on the destructive fires and land clearing which so adversely affect Glossy Black
survival. Sheoak timber is often logged for firewood, an irony reflected in this artwork through
the use of firewood bag scraps.
